Ysimir

Ysimir Heritages | Ysimir Ancestry Feats

Ysimir are clever, adaptable, and fastidious, and happily crowd their large families into the smallest of living spaces.   Most surface-dwelling humanoids know them as a communal people who prefer cramped conditions, with up to 100 individuals living in a given house. If they can't find homes in towns, they will instead live in caves and cavern complexes, even sewers, as these provide great storage for the many and varied goods they bring back from trading expeditions. They're commonly known as hoarders, and for good reason. They will hoard anything and everything they can get their paws on, and their warrens are crammed full of unusual odds and ends gathered by previous generations and stowed away in preparation for some future emergency.   They love to travel and will often be found on the road in merchant caravans. They're quite talented with their hands, and have a keen eye for spotting anything out of the ordinary, from threats to treasures.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Ysimir have whiskered snouts, large ears, and hairless tails, and typically have red eyes and short brown or black fur. A common Ysimir is 4 feet tall and weighs around 80 pounds. They vary considerably, however. Even a single family group can have wide variation in hair colour, eye colour, or even size.   They are driven to maintain cleanliness, though this is also reinforced through their strong social structures. Some condescending humanoids often presume they are dirty or diseased. They've even been driven out of some communities all together for this. Because of this, they have formed strong bonds with Goblurins and Draavokiin, and other species who are typically seen as undesirable in major towns and cities due to these prejudiced views.   But these prejudiced people are in actuality wrong, as they are extremely meticulous about personal hygiene. Because their appearance is often considered unnatural, they will often conceal their physical features with hoods, gloves, shoes, long-sleeved tunics, robes, and other layers of clothing when moving through spaces dominated by other races.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Ysimir culture values cooperation and community. Every Ysimir learns - through communal games, social occasions, and sports - to forge fast friendships and connections with Ysimir outside their family. You may never know whose help you're going to need, but when you do, you're going to need it now.   Having a long tradition of working as traders and tinkers, they will travel from one town to another frequently.   Discrimination against them has shaped their culture, prompting them to rely on one another and strengthening their family and communal bonds. They are very good at differentiating between bad actors and those who are simply acting out of ignorance, modeling good behaviour and slowly working to undo generations of racism for those willing to learn. They're always looking for people who don't judge them for their appearance, embracing these people as true friends and welcoming them into their communities. But they can also easily spot determined bigots prone to violence and steer clear of such people, desperately trying to avoid tragedy.

Naming Traditions

Every Ysimir family has perhaps two dozen different names that have been passed from generation to generation, sometimes with minor alterations or alternative nicknames. A grandfather might be Grivver, for example, while his daughter goes by Griva and her son is simply Griv. They are often assigned nicknames by humanoids they interact with, but most find these names distasteful and endure them only when outside Ysimir communities.   Example Names Barnan, Chikis, Chonan, Chibi, Deto, Jass, Jax, Jix, Knagi, Kubi, Lolo, Ninnec, Nos, Popo, Rak, Renzi, Skigim, Tali, Zess

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
