The Story of Soriel's Dance

This is a story the Setajin tell, when the night is cold and @[Soriel's Dance](myth:174596c3-875e-4e21-a885-08a1e10a6d30)‌ lights up the sky in her brightest blue.

Once there was a Maiden of the Fey and her name was Soriel. She was beautiful and filled with passion and life. All who met her loved her, and some too much.

It happened that Ugru, the Demon of Frozen Limbs, was walking about in the Twilight Lands, where he saw Soriel singing sweet airs. And he became filled with lust, such that it was like pressure within him. He felt he must quench it or blow apart.

He used his craft to transform himself, and his rotting gangrenous flesh became smooth. He bowed low to her.

"Soriel, Benil's daughter, would you walk with me?"

"I will not walk with you, for I wish no companion, and for as long as I live, no other will touch me."

Then Urdu returned to his Place of Torment, and bore his lust as long as he could. But it was like a great steam engine and he needed relief or be blown apart.

So he gathered the treasures of Hell, and brought them to Soriel, saying:

"Soriel, Benil's daughter, I bring you these treasures made to dazzle your eyes. Will you let me touch your hair?"

"I want none of your gifts, for I wish no companion, and for as long as I live, no other will touch my hair or any part of me."

Then Urdu released his magic and stood before her, rotting and dark and terrible. And he said:

"Soriel, Benil's daughter, I am Urgu, whose blasts the bones of travelers with cold and sucks their spirits with the cold winds, and I will lie with you or I will die!"

"I will not lie with you or any other, Urgu, Father of Cold Death. For I am Soriel, Benil's daughter."

And when it became clear that nothing he could do would convince the woman to lie with him, Ugru charged at her, determined to have her by force.

But Soriel was too quick and too cunning, and she moved out of his way like drifting snow. And she began to dance. And she as she danced, her feet wove colours into the night sky.

And Ugru was captivated by her dance, for when he seemed to tire of it and moved towards her again, she changed her steps and the colour she wove shifted, expressing her moods. Sometimes she felt fear and danger, and then she danced the red light. Then she felt disgust and anger, and she danced the yellow light. But at times, she forgot the Ugru was there and felt the purest love of moving, and then she danced the purple, and her feet wove light most brightly in the sky.

And that is the story of Soriel Dance. And it is said to this day, that Soriel dances in the sky. And when there is danger, the Dance is red. And when there is woe and rage, she dances yellow. But when all it well, and travelers may safely go across the ice, and Setajin may take their ease and tell stories, the lights are most bright and purple in the sky.

Praise be to Soriel, whose dancing keeps the Demon of Cold Death at bay. May she never tire of her dance.
