Theme Description
The first theme is Power! Power can be understood in many different ways—from the political power or influence some organizations or people can have, to the energy that fuels tech or magic. But whatever it is, power creates agency through a cycle of weaknesses, needs, and actions, which can deeply affect how your world looks! After all, when something or someone powerful takes action, the consequences can usually be felt far and wide.

Theme Description
A frontier, in its modern usage, usually refers to areas that are at the edge of things. A military frontier is often the front line or a political border. A scientific frontier is the edge of what is known. And an explorational frontier (like the Final Frontier in Star Trek) is the border between known and uncharted territory. These are very dynamic and fast-changing areas of your world that you can use to add more life and conflict to your setting! If you are writing about geographical frontiers and swathes of land considered “unexplored”, but which are in fact inhabited by independent sapient species or different cultures, we suggest being very careful as this can potentially slip into a problematic colonial narrative. If in doubt, and especially if you intend to publish your setting, use sensitivity readers.

Theme Description
The past may be gone, but its influence can be felt everywhere in the present. The traditions, legends, and items which are preserved after centuries represent what society considers important; that can beautifully illustrate a culture’s values! History is also used quite often as a justification for political or religious actions, which shows the intrinsic power that history has. When we talk about “relics” as this week’s theme we don’t mean just physical objects, but also traditions, people, cities, and generally anything that is old but still exists in some way in the present.

Theme Description
Communication is essential for… well, for everything! From interpersonal relationships to diplomacy and war, communication makes the world work—or not work, if handled poorly. And when it comes to worldbuilding, the flow of information is a great storytelling tool, especially to add intrigue and mystery to your stories! Communication and language can also help reinforce the themes of your world: if secrecy is important, it will probably be full of secret codes. And of course, thinking about logistics (which is just another part of communication) and isolated communities can add even more depth to your world!
